NOTES:

I did not know grand-daddy Sam. Mama said we met him when we were babies but of course I don't remember him. I've been able to get to know him through the historical records that I have accessed and put them together with what Mama has told me. According to his WWI draft registration card, he was born near Macon, Mississippi. Allegedly, he is the descendant of "Chief White Cloud" (from an unknown tribe) through his father, Jack Sr. This was relayed by my mother's cousin Lucille (can't remember her last name) from Chicago. She wrote it in a letter to Mama so I will need to find it and see if Mrs. Lucille gives her source. I would like to verify this oral history with a goal to either confirm or negate it. Jack Sr had a brother named Jeff Sr and Jeff Sr had a son named Jeff Jr. There is a lead on a "Chief Jeff" or "Little Chief" which I am attempting to investigate. As noted on his funeral program, grand-daddy Sam attended New Hope School, probably up until the 6th grade as the highest level of education he completed is listed as grade 6 on the 1940 census. He was employed by his father as a laborer on a farm during the years 1917-1918. Grand-mama Lillian lived on Baptist Hill Rd and behind her backyard was a fence which bordered the farm of grand-daddy Sam. During our 1985 trip, I distinctly remember a horse coming to the fence and my mother commenting that it was her father's favorite horse, Jack. I've always wondered if he named it after his father. She also told me that this horse had bit her father which I took as a warning not to mess with it. Grand-daddy Sam owned a grocery store but I don't recall the name of it or its location. It shows that he was a stockman in the grocery industry on his death certificate. He was both a farmer working on his own account and as an employer of a general farm as indicated on the 1920 and 1940 censuses. I have not yet found him on the 1930 census or city directory and I think this is because he and his family were on the move to Chicago, Illinois. On the obituary of one of his sons, Sam Jr, it says that the family moved to Chicago in 1938. The Social Security application that he completed in 1941 was for a Detroit, Michigan address but no employer was listed. That would have thrown me for a loop had I not known his sister, Lula ALLEN nee WILLIAMS died there in 1949 and some of the WILLIAMS family still lives in Detroit today. A Chicago address was given on grand-daddy Sam's 1942 WWII draft registration card. His employer at this time was the National Tea Company, a grocery store chain (see 3rd picture below). I assume that he and his family lived in Macon, Mississippi during the summer to farm their land. Grand-daddy Sam died of prostate cancer in 1979 and I still remember the day that Mama left to go to Chicago. We were living on St. Louis Ave at the time and daddy took care of us, even combing our hair. What I don't remember is whether Mama went to see her ailing father in the hospital or just to attend his funeral. Grand-daddy Sam left Mama two acres of land after he died. It might not sound like much but it meant a great deal to her. Unfortunately, 1985 was a year of hard times so my mother had to sell it to a cousin on her mother's side. He said that he planned to build a gas station there. I want to return to that piece of land and see how it has fared since then. I will take some of its earth, hopefully it will be that red clay Mama liked to eat and put it in a glass jar, an earthly reminder of my mother and her father.

OBITUARY

"Remember me as you pass by, for as you are now, once was I. As I am now, you soon shall be. Prepare yourself to follow me."

Sam Williams was born July 23, 1892 in Macon, Miss. to the parents of Jack and Elizabeth Williams. Sam accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized and united with the New Hope Methodist Church, which he was a member until he departed this life at 11:00 p.m. on August 1, 1979.

Sam was educated at New Hope School in Macon, Miss. He was a happy and friendly person. His love and devotion for fellow-man never ceased. He became ill and came to Chicago, Ill. on the first of April, 1979, to make his home with his children. He entered Mercy Hospital on April 4, 1979.

Recently, Sam quoted that he was going home, because he had to go, we all have to go sometime. He knew that everythings was done to the best, and did not want anyone to cry. He said, what will be, will be; and God will take care of it all, just rejoice.

Survivors include: his wife, Flora Williams; his devoted children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; nephews, nieces, one sister, Essie Thatcher of Memphis, Tenn.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
