Special Announcement
I will no longer be updating the Blogger version of Broussard-Gregory-Sledge-Williams (BGSW). I wanted to have BGSW on two blog platforms as a backup in case something ever happened to either one of them but it is overwhelming to always make changes to the genealogy research on both blogs whenever new information is found on my ancestors. I hope that this will make it easier for me to start writing again. So if you are interested in keeping up to date with new postings, please go to the Wordpress version of Broussard-Gregory-Sledge-Williams (BGSW) now called "my roots | my tree". Don't forget to change your subscription when you visit. See you there and I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you!

Camp Funston in Kansas, Missouri circa 1918 |
I never got the chance to ask Grandmama Lillian SLEDGE what her father was like or to ask my mother if she ever told any stories about him. As you can see from his military grave registration, Papa Ben was a private in the Army. Aunt Edna said that he got shell shock as a result of the war. I have a Fold3 membership but there doesn't appear to be any records available for him there so I plan to order them from NARA. Who knows, maybe there is a picture of him on file. I was unable to find a marriage record for Ben and Lucy (online) who could have married anytime after 1910. A visit to the Noxubee County courthouse would have to be made to search on a marriage license, pending my arrival stateside. Unless my Macon family would like to help me out with that...hint, hint <smile>. Ben was Lucy's second husband (on the 1910 Noxubee County, Mississippi census she is listed as the wife of Lee QUINN and a Noxubee County marriage license was located for them...more on that when I get around to creating a profile page for her). It is possible that if Lee QUINN wasn't deceased (a death record search request for him is pending), she never divorced him (or did she?) and spent her life with Ben as a common-law wife. I'm optimistic that they were legally married however in genealogy, that has to be proven with documentation. Ben's occupations were as a laborer employed by Henry M. JONES in Macon, Mississippi; a baker and a farmer. The latter two he possibly worked at simultaneously and apparently he was working on his own account as an employer from 1920 up until 1930 when he was listed as being a farmer. Although his last occupation on his death certificate was given as a baker which ended the year of 1931. Perhaps he had stopped farming and continued as a baker but then stopped working altogether after 1931 due to illness? Ben died from a hemorrhage caused by piles. There was no indication of the duration for this illness on his death certificate because he had no doctor and in fact, no doctor was ever asked for. We can only speculate as to the why and how of his death with no attending physician: was there no doctor available at the time? Did he live too far away from a clinic or hospital where he could not travel because he lacked transportation or was not feeling up to the traveling? Did he not like doctors and was into curing himself with natural medicine? Or he knew his time had come and felt no doctor could help him? Whatever the case, I hope that he did not suffer.
12 August 2013 update: Cousin Alton CHANEY did some investigation of Papa Ben's military company on Google and came across two sources of information. One was Wikipedia and the other was the A3Genealogy (A3G) blog of a Kansas City, Missouri professional genealogist, Kathleen Brandt. She wrote about her discovery of a great-uncle who served in the 805th Pioneer Infantry nicknamed the "Bearcats". They were an all-Black infantry and coincidentally, Papa Ben also served with them in Company G (see the image of his military grave registration). Prompted by Kathleen's description of the book her great-uncle was mentioned in, I tracked it down on the website of Archive.org, an incredible powerhouse of FREE "universal access to all knowledge". Unfortunately, we did not find Papa Ben anywhere on the pages dedicated to Company G in this book, titled, "Victory: History of the 805th Pioneer Infantry American Expeditionary Forces". There is an explanation offered that might explain why only a small amount of soldier's names made it to print, "It is not the purpose of this history to make individual mention because space will not allow. Company 'G', since its inception, has been 'on top' all the way through. The men have been loyal to themselves, their officers, and non-commissioned officers, and their country, and they hold a place of high esteem in the eyes of their officers. They can return to civil life with a consciousness of a task well done and carry with them always the memories of their various careers as members of Company 'G', of the 805th Pioneer Infantry, the most efficient colored regiment in France" (page 136). I have put in a request for the retrieval of Papa Ben's military records from NARA through A3G. Meanwhile, I will continue reading the Victory book to see if Papa Ben's name appears. Stay tuned for another update provided that happens and/or his file is found!

WWI Final Payment Roll Number 1-2 |
28 September 2013 update: I added a collage of three scanned images received from Kathleen via NARA and the transcription. See "1918-1919 WWI Final Payment Roll". This was the only thing found in Papa Ben's military file and does not indicate if he served overseas. It was nice to see that he was paid upon discharge. $82.50 in 1918 is equal to $1,277.80 in 2013 when adjusted for inflation (see the screen capture of the US Inflation Calculator). That was a lot of money back then. I am sure it must have came in handy for him and his family and I hope it lasted for a while.
17 February 2014 update: A 1918 "Local Military Report For Duty" has been added to Papa Ben's profile. His occupation is listed as a baker. His brother younger brother, Walter, was also a baker and called up for military duty at Camp Pike in Arkansas serving with and discharged from the 839th Company TC (TC=transportation corps?), while Papa Ben went to Camp Funston in Missouri. My thought is that they were possibly chosen for their culinary skills to work in the kitchen. Two other WWI documents located for Papa Ben and Walter were the "Statement Of Service Cards" and a 1917-1919 "Mississippi Veterans List" which have been transcribed below. I wonder how they felt being separated from each other during the war.

NOTES: Mama was six months into her second pregnancy and while out walking, she went into premature labor with William. He only lived for two hours and the loss was so painful that she could not bear to look at him. I do not know if he had a funeral but she said his father buried him [somewhere in Macon, Noxubee County]. When we visited Mississippi in 1985, we visited his grave and took pictures of the simple marker. There were so many tall grasses and weeds, we were told to be careful where we stepped because of snakes. I immediately thought of the cottonmouth moccasins for some reason although I didn't know if the cemetery was near any water. For obvious reasons, Mama did not like to talk about William's death so I could glean very little information from her. However she told me a lot about his father, if only I could remember his name. I hope one day, if he is still alive, he will read this page and contact me. I have so many questions that need answering and sadly Mama is not here to help me.
2 September 2012 update: Thanks to my brother Billy for asking Mama's sister, Edna, for the name of William's father. Thanks also to A'Edna! I hope to find out next if William's surname is SLEDGE or JOHNSON.
21 September 2013 update: At last I now know my brother's name full name and that he survived 9 more hours than was previously thought. Maybe I heard Mama wrong or she forgot. Even though Mama is actually a WILLIAMS, her mother gave her the Sledge surname. My brother Billy is really a SANDERS and William is a JOHNSON but Mama gave them the SLEDGE surname. There is something about that SLEDGE name! But I think the shocker was that it appears she named William after her brother, William Lloyd BELL (Uncle Cot). Its highly possible since Mama named Billy (Lil Bill) after Aunt Edna's husband, Billy DAVIS, due to his being in the Vietnam War. Maybe Mama did the same for Uncle Cot if he was in the Vietnam War? I will have to ask Aunt Edna.
16 October 2013: My sister Tina asked A'Edna and Uncle Cot if Mama named William after him. A'Edna then talked to Uncle Cot but either one of them knew. A'Edna and Tina think Mama did this because Uncle Cot was in the military at the time. I guess we'll never really know but its nice to think she would do that for her brother.

Mama grew up in the small town of Macon, Mississippi where everyone knew your business before you did. She loved to tell stories of life in the old days. She and her cousins had an amazingly carefree life coming of age in the Jim Crow South. They swam and fished in the creeks, eating turtle and frog legs (yuck). They played softball in the fields where she broke her wrist. It was an even less than memorable occasion because her father was passing by at the time and at the moment when she broke her wrist, she said "shoot" and he thought she said, "sh*t" so he whupped her for that. My favorite recollection of Mama's childhood memories was of her picking cotton. A truck would come to pick them up at dawn before school to take them to a cotton pickin' farm. They would put rocks at the bottom of their bags to make it weigh more and get more wages. While it was not an honest way to make extra cash, I understand how they could do it in the context of survival. Farmers just did not compensate them enough for their hard earned labor and some probably cheated them too. Mama's favorite subjects in high school were math and history. She wanted to go to college to play the piano and be a singer. She was on the basketball team. By 1967, Mama was a young mother to my brother Billy. Her second child, William, was born prematurely and only lived about 11 hours. A short time afterwards, she migrated to St. Louis, Missouri with her sister Edna. She got a job working at White Castle as a car hop and met daddy this way. They were married 14 years before divorcing. To this union were born two children and a painful miscarriage before I was born. She died of pneumonia and cirrhosis of the liver at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Mama had a beautiful voice and if I close my eyes now, I can still hear her singing. She was always a beautiful person, inside and out, kind, caring and forgiving. She was also a people person with a great sense of humor, just like my father, and was quite the talker. Many a time she cracked us up with her sayings, of which there are way too many to list here. Family was dear to her and she kept in touch with hers and my father's. There are two holes in my heart that can never be patched up, one for my father and one for her.

Reverend E.G. Shields, Sr., Pastor
Mount Beulah M.B. Church, Officiating
Margaret Ruth Gregory was born on February 21, 1950 to Lillian Sledge and the late Sam Williams, in Macon, Ms. She departed this life on October 27, 2006.
Margaret was educated at Macon High School, in Macon, Mississippi. Margaret enjoyed her school career, often mentioning the pride she felt at being named valedictorian in junior high school. Showing her athletic ability, Margaret played basketball for Macon High School and also played in neighborhood softball games when she could. An equal fan of nature, Margaret remarked on the numerous adventures she had during the spring and summer months.
Margaret confessed hope in Christ at an early age at Second Baptist M.B. Church of Macon, MS. In later years, she continued her faith at St. Peter's A.M.E. Church in St. Louis. Margaret was a devoted reader of Scripture and loved to sing, especially gospel.
In March of 1966, Margaret gave birth to her son, Billy Johann Sledge. In 1968, she and Billy made the journey to St. Louis, Missouri. During this time, one of her first jobs was a 'carhop' at White Castle. It was there she met her soon to be husband. Margaret Ruth Sledge and Curtis Allen Gregory were married on March 24, 1973. Curtis was very proud to become the father of Billy and soon all three welcomed the births of Tara Renee Gregory in January of 1975 and Tina Nicole Gregory in March of 1976.

"My mama was a shining example of forgiveness ever since I can remember. If someone hurt her, she would usually not respond in kind and turn the other cheek" (TRG) |
Although divorced from Curtis, she was saddened by his death in 1994. Margaret's love of people knew no bounds. If you talked to her for five minutes, you knew her and she never forgot you. She felt that three of her greatest accomplishments were her children and she shared tremendously in their success, watching each one graduate from college. Her latest joy was being able to help raise her first grandchild, Omar Nafel Alenazi.
Margaret leaves to mourn her passing: a loving mother, Lillian Sledge of Macon, Ms; three children, Billy of St. Louis, MO, Tara of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Tina of St. Louis, MO; her grandson, Omar of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Five siblings (born to Lillian Sledge), Jean Holman and William Bell of Memphis, TN, Carlene Graham and Wade Sledge of Macon, MS, and Edna Davis of St. Louis, MO; also leaves, siblings born to her father, Sam Williams a multitude of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family of Margaret Ruth Gregory wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation for not only this time of need, but for each moment that you have given her and us over the years. Thank you for your expressions of kindness and love offered through cards, floral arrangements, phone calls, visits, and other equally important acts. Dear Mama,
Are you really gone? It is difficult, at the very least, to believe. You would be overwhelmed at the outpouring of love and support. It equals the love and support you so willingly bestowed upon each of us, day after day. You never complained and you always gave, even if you didn't have it to give. You were (and still are in our hearts), one of the best people to have graced this earth. Your intelligence, humor, warmth, and beauty are everlasting. Thank you, thank you, thank you. WE LOVE AND MISS YOU ~Billy, Tara, Tina, and Omar

My father was a people person with a big heart and humorous disposition. He was a dapper G and dressed up in suits just to go to the theater to watch a movie. When my father was born, he only weighed 2lbs so my grandmother fattened him up with her cooking. He was larger than life and at 6'2, a big man. I loved his big belly...he was a lot to love. They called him Big Curtis and my 5'1 mom, Lil Margaret. He graduated from Beaumont High School on Natural Bridge Rd in St. Louis, Missouri where he was a member of the swim team, track team (shot put) and if I remember correctly from looking through his yearbook, football. Due to a weak heart, he was exempted from serving in the Vietnam war. He met Mama at White Castle when she was working as a car hop and wooed her with roses and record albums. She said he would open up the trunk of his car and show them to her. Romantic right? They were married in 1972 at grandmama Mary Lou's house, a short time after he had suffered a stroke which made one side of his face droop slightly. It shows up clearly in the wedding photos. He was multi-skilled and was able to work at various jobs: manager of a theater which was right up his alley since he loved movies, photographer (earned an associate degree in photography from St. Louis Community College, Florissant Valley), contractor (all levels of construction and helped his best friend Richard SLEDGE...no relation to my mother that I know of...build his liquor store on Lucas & Hunt Road in Normandy, St. Louis, Missouri from the ground up), hunter (he hunted deer and rabbit with both guns and crossbows), archery, fishing, Boy Scout master, good with fixing cars, a bouncer in nightclubs and a private investigator. When the doctors told my father to stop smoking, drinking and eating unhealthy food, he told my mother that he could stop drinking but not smoking and eating. Even though they gave him only 6 months to live, he would not give them up. I guess it was his way of enjoying life before death. He went to visit his father's grave were I hope he received some solace and made peace with death. He made sure that he went to visit his BROUSSARD family in Texas as that was probably the last time he would see them. It was after that his health started to decline drastically. After being in the hospital for two weeks, he died of multiple organ failure at Jewish Hospital (now called Barnes-Jewish Hospital). A good man, gone too soon.

I did not know grand-daddy Sam. Mama said we met him when we were babies but of course I don't remember him. I've been able to get to know him through the historical records that I have accessed and put them together with what Mama has told me. According to his WWI draft registration card, he was born near Macon, Mississippi. Allegedly, he is the descendant of "Chief White Cloud" (from an unknown tribe) through his father, Jack Sr. This was relayed by my mother's cousin Lucille (can't remember her last name) from Chicago. She wrote it in a letter to Mama so I will need to find it and see if Mrs. Lucille gives her source. I would like to verify this oral history with a goal to either confirm or negate it. Jack Sr had a brother named Jeff Sr and Jeff Sr had a son named Jeff Jr. There is a lead on a "Chief Jeff" or "Little Chief" which I am attempting to investigate. As noted on his funeral program, grand-daddy Sam attended New Hope School, probably up until the 6th grade as the highest level of education he completed is listed as grade 6 on the 1940 census. He was employed by his father as a laborer on a farm during the years 1917-1918. Grand-mama Lillian lived on Baptist Hill Rd and behind her backyard was a fence which bordered the farm of grand-daddy Sam. During our 1985 trip, I distinctly remember a horse coming to the fence and my mother commenting that it was her father's favorite horse, Jack. I've always wondered if he named it after his father. She also told me that this horse had bit her father which I took as a warning not to mess with it. Grand-daddy Sam owned a grocery store but I don't recall the name of it or its location. It shows that he was a stockman in the grocery industry on his death certificate. He was both a farmer working on his own account and as an employer of a general farm as indicated on the 1920 and 1940 censuses. I have not yet found him on the 1930 census or city directory and I think this is because he and his family were on the move to Chicago, Illinois. On the obituary of one of his sons, Sam Jr, it says that the family moved to Chicago in 1938. The Social Security application that he completed in 1941 was for a Detroit, Michigan address but no employer was listed. That would have thrown me for a loop had I not known his sister, Lula ALLEN nee WILLIAMS died there in 1949 and some of the WILLIAMS family still lives in Detroit today. A Chicago address was given on grand-daddy Sam's 1942 WWII draft registration card. His employer at this time was the National Tea Company, a grocery store chain (see 3rd picture below). I assume that he and his family lived in Macon, Mississippi during the summer to farm their land. Grand-daddy Sam died of prostate cancer in 1979 and I still remember the day that Mama left to go to Chicago. We were living on St. Louis Ave at the time and daddy took care of us, even combing our hair. What I don't remember is whether Mama went to see her ailing father in the hospital or just to attend his funeral. Grand-daddy Sam left Mama two acres of land after he died. It might not sound like much but it meant a great deal to her. Unfortunately, 1985 was a year of hard times so my mother had to sell it to a cousin on her mother's side. He said that he planned to build a gas station there. I want to return to that piece of land and see how it has fared since then. I will take some of its earth, hopefully it will be that red clay Mama liked to eat and put it in a glass jar, an earthly reminder of my mother and her father.

OBITUARY
"Remember me as you pass by, for as you are now, once was I. As I am now, you soon shall be. Prepare yourself to follow me."
Sam Williams was born July 23, 1892 in Macon, Miss. to the parents of Jack and Elizabeth Williams. Sam accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized and united with the New Hope Methodist Church, which he was a member until he departed this life at 11:00 p.m. on August 1, 1979.
Sam was educated at New Hope School in Macon, Miss. He was a happy and friendly person. His love and devotion for fellow-man never ceased. He became ill and came to Chicago, Ill. on the first of April, 1979, to make his home with his children. He entered Mercy Hospital on April 4, 1979.
Recently, Sam quoted that he was going home, because he had to go, we all have to go sometime. He knew that everythings was done to the best, and did not want anyone to cry. He said, what will be, will be; and God will take care of it all, just rejoice.
Survivors include: his wife, Flora Williams; his devoted children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; nephews, nieces, one sister, Essie Thatcher of Memphis, Tenn.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The family wishes at this time to extend their sincere thanks and deep gratitude and most of all appreciation for the many expressions of sympathy, and the act of kindness and consideration shown them in their hours of bereavement.
"LOVING MEMORIES"
Dark shadow fall in the lives of us all. Sickness and sorrow come to us all; but through it we grow and learn to stand tall. His gentle face, a patient smile with sadness we recall, he had a kind word for each, and died beloved by all.
Although I have left you in this life, I have no more pains, struggle, or strife, so please do not cry, do not worry or grieve. God knows what is best, and He will comfort the bereaved.
Daddy, you are not forgotten, nor will you ever be; as long as life and memory last, we will remember thee. Our hearts are sore, as time goes by, we will miss you more; your loving smile, your gentle face, no one can fill your vacant place.
